As a mum of three active boys, I often thought about buying a set of Funky Monkey Bars.
I often see ads on my feed for Funky Monkey Bars. It shows active children climbing, swinging and having a blast.
The trouble is, they are expensive. I’m talking, thousands of dollars expensive.
Not dissimilar to the Thermomix, we thought about it for years.
I don’t regret buying a set. I simply regret waiting so long.
Expensive
One of the main reasons we waited so long was the cost. Depending on the set and accessories you buy, it can set you back $1000 (for the basic set) or upwards of $5000. It’s a lot of money.
I have come to realise that when we choose to buy things of high quality, we have less items to manage in our homes and backyards, they are always well loved and played on and they last.
There are items that we have spent a lot of money on but have never regretted it. Here are some:
- Thermomix: Cost us $2500. Use it multiple times a day. I often write articles about them because we think it is the ultimate appliance and worth looking into buying one.
- Springfree Trampoline (Jumbo): $3000 (won it). Unlike friends of ours who bought cheap trampolines and have had to replace netting and the mat, ours is still going strong (since 2018).
- Aaron’s Outdoors Cubby house: $6000+ (bought it on Marketplace). One of the highlights of our backyard. On stilts with a slide and sandpit underneath. Gets used everyday and is a hit when friends come over.
- Connetix: Cost $1300+. Our Connetix magnetic tiles are one of our most expensive toys. However, they are played with almost every day. The cost per use would be incredibly low. Worth every dollar.
- Lego: $1400+. Loved by all of our boys. They love following instructions and building their own creations. Timeless toy.
When we choose a cheap option, it saves money in the short term but often doesn’t last very long, and we need to order new parts or an entirely new product. We have to find a way to dump the broken toys. This is terrible for the environment and often a waste of money.
Why?
We are impressed with our Funky Monkey bars for a number of reasons. Mainly:
- Quality
- Australian company – steel made here
- Durability
- Warranty
- Good reputation – word of mouth, reviews
- Good resell value. Get snapped up quickly
How to afford one?
Look out for sales
Big Christmas present – ask for money from Grandparents / money towards an accessory

How much did we pay?
We were open to purchasing new, but aware that the cost of living is so high. We always look for secondhand options before buying new. Savvy shopping not only saves us money but also reduces the impact on the environment.
We found a set for $1200 ONO on Marketplace.
I’ve been wanting to to improve my bartering skills. I asked the lowest that she would consider. She replied, ‘anything over $800.’ I transferred $850 to her.
What a deal!
How old was it?
The Funky Monkey Bar set was over ten years old.
What was the quality like?
We think it was quite remarkable after ten years. No rust, even after being outside all of that time. Still in good nick, colour was there and super strong. You can tell that it’s a quality product. My husband was impressed.

How to save money on a Funky Monkey Bars purchase
It’s no secret that Funky Monkey bars are expensive. Here’s how to save money when purchasing:
- Buy on sale – follow them on social media.
- Sign up for their newsletter
- Buy secondhand. Beware of scams. There are numerous Gumtree and Marketplace scams for Funky Monkey Bars. I was almost sucked into one. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
- Add accessories for Christmas or birthday presents
We always get comments on how wonderful our monkey bars are. Most of our friends and family start looking at where to buy them after seeing our set.
Funky Monkey Bars really are a wonderful asset to any backyard, large or small!
