Have you ever considered buying the gift of an experience for someone? We all have those friends and family members that can be tricky to buy for. They might already have everything they need, be wealthy enough to buy what they want, or perhaps just be too fussy.
Most of us have enough stuff already. Clothes, toys and homewares are far cheaper to buy than they used to be. This often means that it is easier to accumulate than ever before. Our homes are full of things that we need to declutter. We don’t need any more body lotion, hand cream or novelty socks. Most gifts are thoughtful and well-meaning but not always what we need or want.
This is where gifting experiences come in. Experience-based gifts are brilliant for seven reasons.
- They don’t clutter up your house
- They are often fun or unique
- They can build upon an existing skill
- They can teach a new skill
- They can be booked in for a time convenient to them
- They can be a catalyst for meeting new people
- They help create wonderful memories
Below is a list of ideas for experience-based gift ideas in Adelaide. Some are ideas for children, some for adults, and some for both. (Don’t buy a Paint and Sip experience for a child, or a Build-A-Bear gift voucher for an adult.) It is not a comprehensive list, but simply a tool to help you get started.
There are so many options to choose from. Narrowing them down is the hard part! Once you have picked an experience that would suit the person you are buying for, decide on the location that would be best.
Check that the business can offer a gift card or certificate. If they don’t, you could always give money with a little note attached to the idea for the experience. Find a flyer or print some information to pop into the card. Alternatively, use a website like Red Balloon, Groupon, Scoopon or WEA to find something that is right for them or a gift voucher to choose their own.
Know the person that you are buying for. If you would like to buy a massage voucher for a friend, consider whether they like the experience of Endota or would be happy with a shopping centre massage instead. (Personally, I’d prefer to go to Chi Massage at Westfield so I can use my health insurance card, meaning I can have a longer experience!)

Giving the gift of experience can be a thoughtful way to wish someone a happy birthday. It won’t be a present that gathers dust on their shelf, sits unused in a drawer or added to the gift cupboard. It can open up a new world by helping them learn a new skill, meet new people, push their limits and create memories.
You can choose an experience that they have enjoyed before, like a massage or pedicure, or something they have never tried like paintball or horse riding. You can choose something for them to enjoy alone, with their partner or you, or as a group activity. They can book it for when it suits them best. What a gift that would be!
As I wrote this list, I couldn’t help but feel excited at the possibilities. It made me want to book some experiences right away!
